The enzyme, characterized from mycobacteria, is involved in the biosynthesis of methylglucose lipopolysaccharide (MGLP). The enzyme can also act on 2-O-(α-D-glucopyranosyl)-D-glycerate, but with lower activity.

The expected taxonomic range for this enzyme is: Mycobacteriaceae
