The enzyme from Bilophila wadsworthia requires pryidoxal 5'-phosphate as a cofactor, is reversible, and catalyses the first step of anaerobic taurine degradation. Hypotaurine (i.e. 2-aminoethanesulfinate) and beta-alanine are also significant donors of an amino group.
