mesaconase activity of class I fumarase contributes to mesaconate utilization by Burkholderia xenovorans. Mesaconate is metabolized through its hydration to (S)-citramalate. The first reaction of the pathway, the mesaconate hydratase (mesaconase) reaction, is catalyzed by a class I fumarase.
