physiological function the enzyme does not show myotoxic activity, but induces edema and actively participates in the pathogenesis of snake bite. The enzyme is able to induce increments in interleukin-12p40, TNF-alpha, interleukin-1beta and interleukin-6 levels and no variation of interleukin-8 and interleukin-10 in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated in vitro, suggesting that the enzyme induces proinflammatory cytokine production by human mononuclear cells Bothrops leucurus
