physiological function | wild-type mesangial cells respond to staurosporine with increased DNA fragmentation and caspase-3 processing, which is enhanced in SK1-/- cells. SK2-/- cells are highly resistant to staurosporine-induced apoptosis. The basal phosphorylation and activity of the anti-apoptotic protein kinase B and of its substrate Bad are decreased in SK1-/- but not in SK2-/- cells. Upon staurosporine treatment, phosphorylation of protein kinase B and Bad decrease in wild-type and SK1-/- cells, but remain high in SK2-/- cells.
