physiological function hypusine modification is an irreversible protein modification and naturally occurring eIF5A exists predominantly as the hypusinated form. Deoxyhypusine synthase catalyzes the transfer of the aminobutyl moiety from spermidine to a specific lysine of the eIF5A precursor to form the deoxyhypusine [N?-(4-aminobutyl)lysine] intermediate.
