physiological function methanesulfonate is a metabolic intermediate of dimethyl sulfide and desulfonated by monooxygenase SsuD. SsuD is essential for desulfonation, but disruption of the SsuD gene does not affect utilization of pentanesulfonate or butanesulfonate Pseudomonas putida
