The enzyme catalyses the first committed step in the biosynthesis of γ-butyrolactone, as well as 2-alkyl-4-hydroxymethylfuran-3-carboxylate (methylenomycin furan) autoregulators that control secondary metabolism and morphological development in Streptomyces bacteria.
