Requires Na+ or K+ for maximal activity . Ornithine, lysine, aspartate, and alpha-, beta- and gamma-aminobutanoate cannot act as substrates . However, acetyl-CoA can be replaced by propanoyl-CoA, although the reaction proceeds more slowly . Forms part of the ectoine-biosynthesis pathway.
